These alarms must be hardwired or have a 10-year battery life and must meet Australian Standard AS 3786-2014.

From 1 January 2022, all existing residential dwellings being leased or sold must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms that comply with the new laws. This means that landlords and property managers must ensure that their properties have the appropriate smoke alarms installed and that they are regularly maintained and tested.

It is important to note that these laws apply to all residential dwellings, regardless of when they were built. Homeowners and property managers who do not comply with these laws may face fines and legal action in the event of a fire or other emergency.
